Family Billing

Group siblings under one household billing aggregate — a single subscription for the whole family instead of a separate charge per student, with optional sibling discounts.

Creating a Family
  1. 1

    Go to Billing > Families

Navigate to Dashboard > Billing > Families and click 'New Family'.

  2. 2

Name the family and pick the roster

Give the family a name (e.g. 'The Smith Family') and check the students who belong to it. A student can only belong to one family at a time.

  3. 3

    Choose the billing owner

The billing owner must be a guardian of at least one roster student — the options are drawn from the guardians on the selected students' profiles.

  4. 4

    Pick a billing mode

ONLINE creates a household Stripe subscription and opens checkout immediately after you save. MANUAL is tracked by staff — no checkout is created.

  5. 5

    Choose pricing: per-kid or flat

Per-kid keeps each student on their own Package/Unlimited plan (with an optional sibling discount applied at checkout). Flat charges one fixed price for the whole household using a FAMILY-type billing plan, regardless of headcount.

  6. 6

    Save

For ONLINE families, saving immediately opens Stripe Checkout for the billing owner to complete. For MANUAL families, the family is created as ACTIVE right away.

Per-Kid vs. Flat Pricing
  1. 1

Per-kid: each student keeps their own plan

Every roster member is assigned an individual PACKAGE or UNLIMITED plan. The family's combined total is the sum of each member's plan, minus any sibling discount.

  2. 2

Flat: one price for the whole household

The family is billed a single FAMILY-type plan amount regardless of how many students are on the roster. There's no per-kid plan assignment and no sibling discount — the flat price already covers everyone.

  3. 3

    Switching between modes

Billing mode and pricing mode (per-kid vs. flat) can't be changed after a family is created — disband the family and create a new one to switch.

Sibling Discounts
  1. 1

    Studio-wide default tiers

Set default sibling-discount tiers (e.g. the 2nd child gets 10% off) for your whole studio under Billing > Family Settings. These apply to every per-kid family unless overridden.

  2. 2

    Per-family override

When creating or editing a family, you can override the studio default: use custom tiers just for this family, or disable the sibling discount entirely for this family.

  3. 3

    How the discount is applied

Tiers rank each member's plan price from highest to lowest and apply the tier's percentage to the Nth-priciest plan (e.g. a 'child #2' tier discounts the second-most-expensive plan on the roster). Flat-priced families never get a sibling discount — the flat rate already covers the whole household.

  4. 4

One discount line, not one per child

The discount isn't split per plan — Stripe doesn't support discounting individual checkout line items, so MyDojang mints a single aggregate coupon for the whole subscription. Parents see one 'Sibling discount' line on the invoice, not a separate discount per child.

Collecting Payment / Retrying a Failed Checkout
  1. 1

    When you'll see 'Collect payment'

An ONLINE family shows a 'Collect payment' button whenever it's still PENDING_PAYMENT — the billing owner hasn't completed Stripe Checkout yet. This covers abandoned checkouts, expired sessions, and families created through the public multi-child join flow.

  2. 2

    Click Collect payment

MyDojang reopens Stripe Checkout for the family, reusing the same pending billing rows. If a per-kid family has a member without a plan assigned yet, you'll be asked to pick one before checkout opens.

  3. 3

    Retry-safe

Retrying never double-charges or creates duplicate billing rows — the same pending rows are reused across attempts.

Converting Existing Students to a Family
  1. 1

    Click 'Convert existing students'

On the families list, use this button instead of 'New Family' when students already have their own active billing plans and you want to pool them into one household subscription without disrupting billing history.

  2. 2

Pick the roster, owner, and name

Choose the students to convert (each needs an active PACKAGE or UNLIMITED plan already on file), a billing owner from their guardians, and a family name — it prefills from the owner's last name.

  3. 3

    Requires a card on file

Conversion reuses the billing owner's existing Stripe payment method. If none is on file, nothing is charged or changed — use 'New Family' instead so checkout can collect a card first.

  4. 4

    What happens on conversion

Each student's unused prepaid time is credited toward the new family subscription, their old individual subscriptions are cancelled, and the family subscription takes over going forward. If an old subscription fails to cancel, MyDojang shows you its Stripe id to reconcile by hand.

  5. 5

    Per-kid pricing only

Converted families always keep each student's existing plan with sibling discounts — flat family plans aren't supported at conversion. To put a family on a flat rate, create it with 'New Family' instead.

Editing the Roster
  1. 1

    Add or remove members

Click 'Edit Roster' on a family to change who's on it, update the billing owner, or adjust the sibling-discount override.

  2. 2

Families with a live Stripe subscription

For an ACTIVE family already subscribed, adding a member requires picking a plan for them — MyDojang syncs the change to the live Stripe subscription (adjusting items and the discount coupon) before updating the roster.

  3. 3

    Families not yet subscribed

For a PENDING_PAYMENT family, roster changes are a simple local update — no Stripe call happens until checkout is run.

Disbanding a Family
  1. 1

    What disbanding does

Disbanding cancels the family's Stripe subscription (if one is active) and releases every member back to individual billing status.

  2. 2

    Confirm before disbanding

You'll be asked to confirm — the confirmation notes when a live subscription will be cancelled. This can't be undone; recreate the family from scratch if needed.
